Talking Project Evergreen with SFMA — Eric Harshman KYSFMA Vice President
On December 8th Project Evergreen, SFMA, Texas Turfgrass Association and TXSFMA collaborated in a field renovation in Corinth, Texas. I was fortunate enough to assist and participate in this great event that rejuvenated Field #4 at Corinth Community Park. This year the field received a much-needed makeover thanks to a remarkable coalition of over fifty-five turf professionals who volunteered their expertise and time. These dedicated individuals traveled not only from across the great state of Texas but also from neighboring regions, proving that passion for community and the support of the turf industry know no boundaries. The heartwarming renovation effort was powered by an astounding $55,000 in donated supplies and materials. From specialized turf equipment to premium sod and clay, local businesses and industry partners stepped up to ensure the project had everything it needed. The generosity of so many set the stage for a successful transformation and highlighted the impact that collective action can have on a community.
The revitalization of field #4 was no small feat and consisted of several key focal areas. The process began with a full till and laser grade of the infield clay surface, a critical step in creating a safe and playable environment for athletes. Next came the meticulous re-build of the pitcher’s mound and home plate area, complete with brand-new plate and rubber installations. To further enhance the field’s functionality, new base anchors were installed, measured to exact specifications. These professional touches ensure durability and performance for many seasons to come.
In addition, the infield grass and foul territory were stripped and resodded, as well as the area extending more than 20 feet off the back edge of the infield. This not only improved aesthetics but also the playability and safety for the countless athletes that will use the field. At the heart of this project there were familiar faces and new acquaintances brought together by the turf industry who volunteered their time to help a community. The collaboration showcased the unique skills Sports Turf Managers bring to athletic facilities across the state and beyond. By working shoulder to shoulder together, we demonstrated how industry professionals can make a lasting impact beyond their day-to-day work, investing in the next generation and the community.
