Get to know KYSFMA member: Ethan Ray- A&A Lawn and Landscape

  • How did you get into field maintenance?

    • My journey into turf management didn't start in a classroom; it started with a pair of work boots and a passion for being outdoors. I began my career as a seasonal technician, eager to learn the fundamentals of lawn care. I moved from a lawn technician to a supervisor over the years and fell in love with the science of soil and the art of turf maintenance. Turning a job into a lifelong career.

  • What’s a typical day out here look like for you?

    • My typical day includes a mix of route management, in-field visits with our technicians and diagnosing issues with our lawns.

  • What part of the job do you enjoy most?

    • The freedom of working outdoors for a living and meeting with all different types of people.

  • Whats the toughest part about keeping field in good shape?

    • The curveballs kentucky weather throws our way!

  • How do you decide what gets done on a busy day?

    • Having weekly team meetings and our goals visible helps keep everything in focus on what we need to get done on time.

  • What kind of equipment do you use most?

    • Maruyama MSD41 Spray pump

  • Ever had anything funny or unexpected things happen?

    • The benefit when you work with the same team for a while, is every day will usually bring some new and unexpected fun!

  • What some people don’t realize?

    • I don’t believe most people realize the amount of training and research that is needed to grow and help the turf thrive!

  • What takes the longest?

    • This would have to be a tie between a slice seeding or a walk behind aeration!

  • Is there anything you wish some people understood better?

    • Turf maintenance is a marathon not a sprint, this can take some time and is not an overnight transformation.

  • Favorite season for work? Least favorite?

    • Favorite season by far is fall, all the disease and stress from summer are typically moved out and is when everything is thriving! The least of course is the winter since it prevents us from work!
