KYSFMA Vendor Spotlight Meet: Trevor Elliott- Barenbrug USA
Name: Trevor Elliott
Company: Barenbrug USA
Title / Role: Pro Turf Market Development Manager
How did you get started in the turf or sports field industry?
I started mowing lawns after I left the Army in 2012. I eventually ended up with an Associate’s in Turfgrass Manager and another in Landscape Design. From there I started working on golf courses in Northern Illinois, then Texas, and am now in my current position with Barenbrug.
What led you to a career in sales?
The people and relationships. Our industry is incredibly rewarding.
What do you enjoy most about working with sports field managers?
Same answer. The people and relationships. Every person I meet teaches me something new, or I get to be a resource for them. When I see them again, its “How’s the family” or “Congrats on this”.
What problem do you most enjoy helping your customers solve?
Turfgrass management can be very stressful work at times. I take pride in being resource, whether it’s turfgrass related or not. If they can get 5 more minutes for themselves, the family, or whatever it is… If I can help provide that, I’m happy.
What makes your approach or perspective unique in this industry?
Both professionally and personally, I just want to be a resource and a friend. There’s always time to talk business, but I want to get to know the people. I enjoy seeing their personal success just as much as their professional success.
Favorite food?
Mexican. We’ve all heard that saying, first you marry for love, second you marry for money. Well, the first time I married for love and if I ever must marry again, I’ll marry for Tacos. LoL.
What are you listening to right now? (music, podcast, audiobook)
Answering this question literally, I just finished listening to the Conversations from SFMA Conference with Dr. Chase Straw episode on the SFMA Podcast. Generally, I listen to Turfgrass Podcasts and for music, I prefer what I call Cadillac Music (Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller Orchestra….)
Fun fact about you (non-work related encouraged):
My family on my mother’s side is from Frakes, KY near Middlesboro. We would go “Down Home” every summer when I was growing up and I hope to return to the area someday.
Why do you choose to support KYSFMA?
There’s no better way to support Turfgrass Managers than at the local level.
Pro tip for turf or field managers:
Honestly, probably not the soundest advice to some, but I once had a Superintendent that I worked for tell me, “It’s just grass, it will grow back”. This really helped me relax and focus in some stressful moments.
