How did you get into field maintenance?
I interned at Lynn Family Stadium the summer before my senior year in college and absolutely loved it.What’s a typical day out here look like for you?
During the summer, we mostly mow in the mornings after the teams train. In the afternoon, we do a variety of jobs, such as painting, top dressing, aerating, and applying fertilizer. What part of the job do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy being able to visually see the outcome from the work that I put in.What’s the toughest part about keeping this field in good shape?
The toughest part is undoubtedly the weather. Having to plan your work around the forecast can be stressful at times. How do you decide what needs to get done on a busy day?
As a team, we discuss what needs to be done that week. We then put all the jobs at each field on a whiteboard in the office. What kind of equipment do you use the most?
We use our mowers the most.
Ever had any funny or unexpected things happen while working on the field?
During the tail end of the year, all three of our mowers were in the shop or had a hydraulic leak, making it a very stressful week. How do you handle the field after bad weather?
Our fields drain well, but if there is a lot of rain, we will walk out and assess. If it is too wet, we will wait for the field to dry before doing any work. What’s something most people don’t realize goes into keeping a field looking good?
A lot of people don't realize that sometimes we must make the field look bad to make the field look good, such as aerating or verticutting.Which tasks take the longest or require the most patience?
Aerating a three acre field in 100 degree heat can really wear you down, as it can take up to three hours of monotonous walking back and forth at a snails pace. How do you work around team practices or games?
Our teams practice in the morning, which gives us the whole afternoon to do what we need to do. We are lucky in that our stadium field is only used on game days, so during the week there is nobody on the field, which gives us plenty of time to work on it.What’s one thing players or coaches do that makes your job easier? Harder?
Some of our players teach lessons to kids during the week. If we are our on the fields working, they are always willing to work around us and move around. Is there anything you wish people understood better about field maintenance?
Many people assume that when we do a certain job, they should see results at that moment, when in reality it could take a few days to see results. What’s your favorite season for field work? Least favorite?
My favorite season is the summer. The grass is growing and the teams are in the middle of their seasons. My least favorite is the winter when we cannot get out and work on the fields. If you could upgrade anything about the field or equipment, what would it be?
Because we use our mowers the most, having a new mower is definitely high on the list.
